Feather by M.G. Leonard, artwork by Paddy Donnelly, published by Walker
The final instalment of the Twitchers adventures sees the series out in style and really captures the themes of both friendship and the importance and wonder of our natural world that are carried throughout all of the books.
Whilst on a school trip, Ava is witness to a museum heist. The Twitchers are soon on the case, but with a dangerous criminal gang, money-grabbing feather dealers and a mysterious girl and her raven all pointing them in different directions it's not as straightforward as it seems...
It's another thrilling adventure with some really dangerous situations and tense moments... as well as the humour you know is going to come along to balance them out; Pamela and Terry's 'friendship' is comedy gold (and in as spoiler-free a way as possible - the song at the end is hilarious; I told Peapod about it too, so for several days we have all been walking around singing it at full volume - joyous, laugh out loud stuff!)
Speaking of Pamela, the ending in this book felt perfect not just for the book but for the series and it made me smile enormously.
There's enough clues, red herrings and possibilities to make for a great case to try and crack along with the team as you read and I really liked that they all had different ideas about who was behind the heist, their motives and what had happened - it was fun to see who I agreed most with and watch them follow different lines of inquiry and unravel it all.
The star of the show had to be the raven, Caliban, though. I have to confess I did not know before reading this how smart ravens are, and that is another thing I love about these books - they always teach me something as we go along, the birds in them as compelling as the mysteries! It's hard to imagine young people reading these books and not becoming drawn into the fascinating world of birds in some way.
All in all, another exciting mystery full of friendship, nature... and rooftop chases! This is a great end to the series, but it doesn't close off the possibility of further adventures so who knows - maybe one day we'll get to return to Briddvale to solve another mystery! In the meantime, if you have't read MG Leonard's other books, I'd highly recommend those too.
